- The need for power,
- The need for affiliation, and
- The need for achievement.
These are powerful enough that they will drive your choice of careers and ultimately influence the degree of success you have in the world. To the chagrin of the economists and the ire of the CFOs, people don't exist just to pump out as much work that they can to satisfy the greed of the stockholders. They also use work to satisfy social needs—their need for affiliation.
Of course, some are low on the affiliation scale and they like nothing better than to be left alone. This is sometimes referred to as having a high need for autonomy. However, those who are high on affiliation needs will choose jobs and careers but have lots of people around.
People charge them up. People get them motivated. It's all about having friends.
Need for affiliation is one of the most important of all the needs we possess. There is no more psychologically damaging punishment than to isolate someone from others. What is it about power? Those that have it want more. And those who don't have it, want it. Having power makes many people feel good. And so they spend their life continually seeking more of it.
You might call power seductive, you might call this need self-reinforcing; you might hate it, or you my love it but you can never ignore it. Some people believe that to really understand bureaucratic organizations, you must discover how those higher up in the dominance hierarchy exercise power.
Honestly, most people have a distaste, a revolution toward power. Until that is, you get some. They one finds out that you really like it. Not just like it, but really want more. Power is not inherently bad, it is not essentially good, it all depends on how you choose to exercise it.
